Nonnas is a Netflix movie about Joe, a man who starts a restaurant after his mother’s death. Food was the strongest link he had with his mother and grandmother, and opening the restaurant became his way of processing grief. He risks every penny he has to bring this vision to life.
What makes the restaurant special is that he hires four elderly women instead of professional chefs. His dream is simple: he wants people to feel like family, as if their own nonnas (grandmothers) were cooking for them.

The restaurant is being beautifully furnished, and Joe names it after his mother and grandmother, Enoteca Maria. But about a month into business, only relatives and friends visit. Joe faces the hardest decision of closing the restaurant.
If you look closer, things could have turned out differently much sooner if one branding choice had been made differently. Of course there were other factors that impacted the restaurant’s journey, yet this single change could have made a real difference. This is the heart of brand storytelling: how you tell the story of your business, and why it is special.

Instead of naming the restaurant Enoteca Maria, Joe could have chosen Nonnas. That single word instantly communicates the experience to anyone passing by. It tells the story in a way customers understand. Nonnas signals warmth, tradition, and family. Enoteca Maria is deeply personal, but it does not immediately connect with outsiders.
Both names are part of Joe’s brand story. One honors his family, the other appeals directly to the customer. That is why the movie itself is called Nonnas, not Enoteca Maria.
The Lesson for Business Owners
You do not need technical jargon like “brand positioning” or “brand strategy” to grasp this. As a business owner, what matters is telling your story in a way that resonates with your audience. Your brand name, your visuals, your messaging, they should all make it clear why your business is special to them, not just to you.
When customers instantly understand your story, they are more likely to step inside, try your product, and become part of your journey. That is the power of brand storytelling.
